Knee Injuries

Categories of Knee Injuries

Knee injuries often cause extensive time away from sport and recreation, work and activities of daily living.

There are three main categories of knee injuries: Traumatic-causing acute bone, tendon, ligament, muscle or bone damage.
Non Traumatic or Degenerative- resulting in joint wear and tear such as arthritis; and Overuse- where the majority of conditions are due to inflammation or degradation of the tendon (tendonitis/tendonopathy) or its attachment to the bone (enthesopathy/apophysitis) .

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Posterior Cruciate (PCL) Medial and Lateral Collateral (MCL, LCL) injuries are very common in cutting sports and are associated with either the knee giving way from underneath you or following a traumatic impact to the knee.

MCL and LCL injuries are normally managed conservatively with bracing and combined with a graduated rehabilitation program aimed at restoring full pain free function.

Knee Injuries Treatment and Rehabilitation

Complete ACL and PCL tears usually require surgery (ACL/PCL reconstruction) for a successful to return to sport or physically demanding occupations. Rehabilitation following a reconstruction focuses on progressively and gradually loading the new ACL/PCL, restoring full range of knee motion, improving strength and control of the muscles around the knee, hip and ankle, and optimizing landing, running, cutting and sprinting technique. A full rehabilitation will help to prevent the ACL/PCL from re-tearing and minimize early arthritic changes.

Cartilage or meniscus tears are associated with either a twisting injury at the knee or from degeneration in the older population. These tears can lead to early arthritis if they are not managed correctly. Physiotherapy is required pre and post surgery to restore the knee to normal function and to prevent abnormal biomechanics developing into anterior knee pain.

There are numerous overuse conditions which can cause knee pain. Some of the more common injuries include Fat pad impingement, Patella tendonitis, Patellofemoral joint (kneecap) pain syndrome (PFJPS), Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome (ITBS) or referred pain from the hip. Typically these are due a combination to poor running/walking mechanics, excessive training and inadequate recovery. Accurate diagnosis is paramount when treating these injuries to ascertain the key components relating specifically to your condition.
