Children’s Injuries

Children suffer from many of the same types of injuries as adults. However, in addition children sustain very different injuries compared to adults due to the differences in the structure of their growing muscles and bones.

Management of these types of complaints involves modifying the frequency, duration and mode of activity; use of electo-physical agents and anti inflammatory medication to reduce inflammation; bracing; a thorough physical assessment to determine the underlying biomechanical abnormalities that are present and treating them appropriately.

In some of the more severe cases surgery may be required.

Common Children’s Injuries

The most common types of these injures are:

  • Sever’s Disease which affects the heel of the foot at the site of the Achilles tendon attachment.
  • Osgood-Schlatter lesion affecting the front of knee where the patellar tendon attaches.
  • Sinding-larsen-Johansson lesion affects the top of the kneecap at the insertion of the quadriceps tendon.
  • Kohler’s lesion presents as pain over the medial aspect of the foot on the navicular bone
  • Perthes disease is a flattening of the femoral head (ball joint of the hip) and presents as a limp or ache in the groin, thigh or knee.

Apophysitis/Osteochondroses

This category of injury occurs at the tendon attachment sites or at the joint surfaces. The apophyses are relatively weak cartilaginous plates. They become inflamed with overuse or following a rapid growth spurt. The bone may even become completely displaced which is known as avulsion fracture.

Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis

This injury typically occurs in adolescents aged between 12 and 15 years. It occurs when the head of the ball in the hip literally slips from the immature growth plate. This injury may be caused due to a trauma but more commonly it appears gradually. The typical symptoms are radiating knee pain and walking with a limp.

These injuries are particularly serious as the slip may cause a disruption to the blood flow to the femoral head and lead to bone death. An assessment with an orthopaedic surgeon is a necessity.

“Rebecca and Brendon from Southern Sports Physiotherapy have been great in showing me how exercising in the pool (hydrotherapy) is a fun and effective way to ease my back pain and strengthen my core muscles. I look forward to going to hydro every week and exercising  with the other ladies and gents just like me who are looking for a  way to deal with our aches and pains”
