Wrist, Hand & Finger

Causes and Symptoms of Pain

Wrist, hand and finger injuries are commonly sustained during falls, sporting activities, heavy manual lifting and poor ergonomics in the workplace.

Fractures are common following falls and high impact activities and require immobilization with casting, splinting or bracing to heal properly. Physiotherapy generally begins following immobilization and expedites the return of full range of motion, strength and function.

Cartilage and ligament tears are also common around the wrist and thumb following trauma and can cause ongoing pain.

Overuse injuries typically affect tendons around the wrist and can be due to poor technique during functional tasks, overload due to excessive training volume and inadequate recovery.

Physiotherapy for these injuries involves strengthening and stretching the tendons and muscles, advice on self-management techniques, soft tissue releases of the forearm and hand muscles, and dry needling.

Treatment for Wrist, Hand and Finger Injuries

Carpal tunnel syndrome is characterized by numbness, pain and paresthesia (tingling) over the palm of the hand when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel. Conservative physiotherapy treatment includes manual therapy and prescribing a night splint. Carpal tunnel may be treated surgically if symptoms persist.

Osteoarthritis of the hand and thumb can cause pain and limitations in movement. Physiotherapy can help reduce these symptoms.

Finger injuries require an accurate diagnosis and poor management of these injuries can lead to deformity and poor function. A specific rehabilitation program and protecting the injury when resuming sport or work is essential for a good outcome.

“Rebecca and Brendon from Southern Sports Physiotherapy have been great in showing me how exercising in the pool (hydrotherapy) is a fun and effective way to ease my back pain and strengthen my core muscles. I look forward to going to hydro every week and exercising  with the other ladies and gents just like me who are looking for a  way to deal with our aches and pains”
