Hydrotherapy or Aquatic Physiotherapy

What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy utilises specific physiotherapy techniques that combines the properties of water with the knowledge and skills of the physiotherapist, to accelerate the outcome of the rehabilitation process. Hydrotherapy or “aquatic physiotherapy” is a specific physiotherapy technique.

It is an effective way of reducing pain and improving your range of motion. It is used to improve and accelerate the outcome of the rehabilitation process by utilising the warmth and buoyancy of the pool which encourages muscle relaxation and pain reduction thus increasing treatment effectiveness.

It is very effective in treating a whole range of musculoskeletal problems including arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, joint replacements/reconstructions/arthroscopies, fractures, sporting injuries, low back pain/disc injuries, neurological conditions (Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, spinal cord injuries), asthma, weight loss, diabetes, chronic pain syndrome, pre and post natal conditioning, and for general strength, endurance mobility and conditioning.

Hydrotherapy Treatments at Southern Sports Physiotherapy

You do not need to have any swimming experience to participate in Hydrotherapy. Our qualified physiotherapists will develop a pool based exercise programme customized to your specific needs. Buoyancy provided by the water is especially useful for patients with orthopaedic conditions, back problems, knee injuries or arthritis. The water facilitates mobility and assists with the patients exercise by reducing the impact on the joints.

Our hydrotherapy programme is often a stepping stone for patients to progress onto gym or land based exercise programmes. Hydrotherapy sessions are individually supervised and include an initial clinic appointment to establish goals and a home exercise programme. Private consultations are $25.00. Discounts are available for Pensioners, Seniors Card holders or by purchasing multiple pool sessions in advance.

Private health rebates will cover hydrotherapy sessions dependent on your level of cover. Clients are individually assessed and a specific aquatic rehabilitation program is prescribed. Classes are of one hour duration.

Session times are: Tuesday 1.00 to 2.00 pm at Engadine Health (Anzac Avenue. Engadine).
